A modeling contract decides who gets paid, how much, and who controls your image. Too many new models sign agency agreements without understanding exclusivity, commission rates, or expense clauses. An agency that believes in you will explain every term without pressure. One that rushes you is telling you everything.
Terms You Must Understand
Check whether the contract is exclusive or non-exclusive, and get the territory and duration in clear language. Standard agency commission runs 15 to 20 percent, but watch for hidden expenses the agency can charge back to you. Understand how and when you get paid, and what happens to your photos if you leave. Never sign a contract that claims ownership of your name or likeness outright.
Your face is your business asset. Treat the contract like the business document it is, ask every question, and get independent advice before you commit your career to any agency.
Understand the mother agent versus placement agency distinction before you sign with anyone. A mother agent develops you and places you with larger agencies, earning from those placements. A placement agency books you directly with clients. Problems start when one company claims both roles without explaining the double commission. Also scrutinize expense clauses: legitimate agencies may advance costs for comp cards or travel, but those advances should be capped, itemized, and recouped only from earnings — never turned into open-ended debt. If the contract lets the agency spend unlimited money in your name, you are signing a blank check. Get the expense cap, the recoupment terms, and the accounting schedule in writing.
