Some modeling contracts are career builders. Others are traps dressed as opportunities. The difference is in clauses most models never read until it is too late. Knowing which contracts to never sign blind is basic career self-defense.
Contracts to Reject or Renegotiate
Never sign away your name and likeness in perpetuity without serious compensation. Reject unlimited expense chargebacks that let agencies bill you endlessly. Refuse exclusivity without guaranteed minimum work. Question any contract that blocks you from working with other agencies while offering nothing in return. Always get independent review before signing anything that affects your image rights or income for years.
Your signature is powerful. Use it deliberately, read everything twice, and never let excitement override the fine print.
The perpetuity image grab is the most dangerous clause in modeling. Language granting rights in perpetuity across all media now known or hereafter devised means the company owns your face forever, in technologies that do not exist yet, for one flat fee. That clause should trigger an immediate renegotiation or a walkout. Approval rights are the professional standard for established models — the right to approve or reject specific uses of your image before publication. Without them, your face can sell products you would never endorse. Build a personal contract checklist and run every agreement through it: term limits, usage scope, compensation structure, expense caps, and termination rights. Five minutes with a checklist beats five years regretting a signature.
