Every artist faces the question: stay independent or sign? The honest answer is that it depends on what you’re signing and what you’re giving up. A deal that takes your masters, your publishing, and 80 percent of everything for an advance you have to pay back is not a blessing — it’s a loan with your career as collateral. Read every term like your life depends on it.
What Independence Actually Buys You
Staying independent means you own everything: masters, publishing, merchandise, touring income. You move slower, but every dollar your catalog earns comes to you. Ownership is the only retirement plan in music. Distribution deals and partnerships can give you label-level reach without signing your life away.
Only sign when the deal does something you genuinely cannot do yourself: major radio, global touring infrastructure, or real sync placement. Get an entertainment lawyer before you touch a pen — never the label’s lawyer. The best deal is the one you can walk away from. Make sure you always can.
Watch for the middle path most artists miss: partnerships, joint ventures, and label services deals. These give you marketing muscle, distribution, and funding while you keep your masters and creative control. The industry has shifted — the best modern deals look more like partnerships than ownership transfers. If a company will not put its commitments in writing with real penalties for non-performance, walk away. A bad partner is worse than no partner, and your catalog only gets more valuable the longer you hold it.
The question was never label or nothing — it is ownership or regret. Choose the side your future self thanks you for.
