Playlists are the radio of the streaming era — landing on the right one can put your song in front of hundreds of thousands of listeners overnight. But most independent artists pitch playlists completely wrong: they spam curators, pay for sketchy placements, or aim only at the giant editorial lists they cannot reach yet. There is a smarter ladder to climb.
Start with Spotify’s own pitch tool: submit unreleased music through Spotify for Artists at least 7 days before release. It is free, it goes directly to Spotify’s editorial team, and it is the only legitimate path to editorial playlists. Fill out every field — genre, mood, instruments, similar artists — because the data feeds the algorithm behind your Release Radar and Discover Weekly placements.
The independent curator ladder
Below editorial, there is a whole ecosystem of independent curators running playlists with thousands to hundreds of thousands of followers. Find playlists that fit your exact sound, follow each curator’s submission instructions (many use SubmitHub or Groover), and pitch personally — reference a specific playlist and explain why your track fits. Small, on-genre placements drive real listeners and algorithmic signals. Follow the curator, share their playlist, and build a real relationship before you pitch — cold spam gets ignored, genuine engagement gets heard.
Never pay for guaranteed streams or playlist placement — it violates Spotify’s terms, and bot traffic can get your music removed. Earn placements with fit and persistence, then promote each win to climb to the next tier.
